This movie is the
seventh in the X-Men cinematic franchise. I have never seen the first two
movies or the Wolverine. Honestly I have always struggled to like the X-Men
movies due to the fact that there are so many characters. They appear to me to
be rather one-dimensional and I can’t expect an average length movie to
properly develop the characters.
This movie has a massive difference in how some of its characters are developed. For instance, Quicksilver is introduced. His introduction is done extremely well. Every scene he is in is vastly entertaining. My favourite scene in the entire movie is a scene where everything is slowed to Quicksilver speed. It’s funny and awesome. On the other hand, the new characters from the future do next to nothing and the extent of their actions begin and end at mere existence.
Something that really annoyed me towards the end of the film was the plot twist. Anyone who has any prior knowledge of the character could such a twist coming. It happened and quite honestly, I hardly noticed. The character is supposed to have become good and then turned bad again. I never even sensed a change; the twist was so unbelievably predictable. That whole paragraph was probably horrifically explained.
One thing I am overwhelmingly happy about is the long-awaited introduction of Sentinels. It is a well-known fact that over the years the X-Men franchise has utterly ruined some of its characters. For example, their unspeakable version of Deadpool was almost offensive. However these pivotal characters were set-up dramatically. Particularly in the future they truly seemed unstoppable.
I would like to use this final paragraph to bring to light some of the things that confused me with this movie. Firstly, it was briefly mentioned that Azazel (the devil looking mutant from First Class), managed to get captured. This guy was able to teleport! Leading on from this, Nightcrawler is the child of Mystique and Azazel. This now seems impossible. Quicksilver is apparently now called Peter and has no sister. Weird. Finally Kitty Pryde has the new fangled ability to time-travel people’s consciousness’s. These problems don’t really distract from the movie but as a Marvel fan, I thought I bring these things to light.
The movie introduces some fun, new characters… and also some unnecessary ones. It provides some fantastic action scenes and brings back some of our favourite X-Men. Days of Future Past is definitely a good way to spend your time.
