Con Air (1997) Movie Review

Director: Simon West
Writer: Scott Rosenberg
Starring: Nicolas Cage, John Cusack, John Malkovich

I have heard this film thrown about as being the best Nicolas Cage performance in history. I was instantly sceptical due the myriad films of the man that are unforgettably hilarious (even though there are not trying to be). The film honestly delivers upon the promise of an enjoyable film.

Nicolas Cage kills a man. Oops. Because of this, he is sent to prison for a forgettable amount of years. Time passes and he is being taken out of the prison via plane. But these aren’t your Nicolas Cage level prisoners on the plane. They are the baddest mamma jamma you done ever seen.

This film is really silly. Many films are labelled as ‘so bad it’s good’. This generally infers that the people involved in making the film had no idea what they were doing or just made a massive misstep. I feel that Con Air might just be doing it on purpose. You seldom find a movie that both knows that it is ridiculous yet gives an enjoyable experience. The main thing that leads me to believe the approach that was taken in this film was the casting. It may not have been quite so drastic at the time but at this point, these actor’s names are basically taboo. The film includes the likes of John Malkovich, John Cusack, Danny Trejo, Steve Buscemi (maybe not him) and of course, Nicolas Cage.

There are so many fantastic lines brought about by the stupidity of the film. For instance ‘put the bunny back in the box’ is probably a conception that is very new to the human race due to how dumb it sounds. Along with this line, Nicolas Cage’s performance is utterly hilarious. It’s brilliant to see him attempt to mimic grief, as his acquaintances are offed by the convicts. His reactions to the things going on around him are fantastically funny.

The thing I can say against the film is that there is a slight doubt in my mind that it is actually a comedy. As much sense as it would make for it to be a comedy, the tone often contradicts this. It’s hilarious but it is a not a commendable thing to have achieved the opposite genre from the one that you were aiming for.

Con Air is questionably purposefully funny and contains a miasma of questionably awful actors. Despite these things I really enjoyed it.

Con Air receives a: 7/10
