District 9 (2009) Movie Review

An extra-terrestrial species known as ‘prawns’ are oppressed in the slums of Johannesburg. Unfortunately South Africa is running out of space in District 9. This means that they have to forcibly evict all the prawns and move them to the new District 10. When evicting the prawns, Wikus van de Merwe, finds a mysterious canister. This canister sprays some mystical black gloop over Wikus. All seems fine until Wikus finds that he has the hand of a prawn. He escapes from the lab that is doing tests on him. He finds a prawn that says that he can fix him. Wikus using his newfound powers to get himself back to normal. We have ourselves a movie.

My biggest criticism of this movie is its inconsistency. It begins as something that seems like an actual documentary, which was really interesting in that I have really never seen a movie to actually do this. It would have been far more entertaining for me had they kept with this. They didn’t carry on with this style however; they simply made it as normal and boring as possible. The second half of the movie was just another movie where a guy shoots stuff.

The whole idea of the entire movie was really impressive and interesting but it just didn’t live up to what it could have. I had heard a lot about how this movie is referential of South African segregation. It really didn’t feel like that though because the black people at the time… weren’t aliens. At most, the first fifteen minutes of the movie was in parallel with segregation.

Other than this however, the acting was good, the movie wasn’t boring other than right at the end. The movie overall was pretty average and mediocre but I feel that the first part of the movie pushes the movie over the average level. I give District 9 a 5.5/10 – Average-ish

Have you seen ‘District 9’? If you have, let me know what you thought of it by leaving a comment on this review. Perhaps even suggest a movie for me to review next.
