In would like to begin by saying that this is my least
favourite of the original Star Wars movies. This is for a multitude of reasons
and as another precursor I feel that the Star Wars films are far weaker than
the other entries in the expanded universe.
The reason why I rather dislike this movie is because nothing really happens in it. This series is a war in the stars and here we are just given a wild goose chase for Han Solo. In the other two movies, a death star is blown up. They just feel way more epic.
This is not to say that this is a bad movie. This is far from the truth. In fact the movie is rather enjoyable. Every one of the characters is well thought and gives the movie brilliant personality. One of my confusions with the movie is why it had the best Yoda. Every other Star Wars movie with Yoda in it portrays him as a grumpy old guy. From Yoda’s entrance, he is funny and energetic. All the characters are enjoyable particularly C3-PO.
Another area where this movie excels is its settings. You begin on the ice planet Hoth that is greatly made to look like a rebel base, seeming constantly busy. We then venture to the eerie Dagobah, home of Yoda and then enter Cloud City. All these places make the universe seem more real as if these are well known places.
When I was watching this movie last night, I was truly stretching to think how this could be regarded as the best Star Wars movie. I just feel that the entire plot of the movie could be briefly skipped in one of the trademark yellow text scrolls.
The Empire Strikes Back is the story of how the Empire strikes back. I personally would like to debunk the rumours that this is the best Star Wars movie despite it having great characters and setting. It simply doesn’t feel big enough to be the best. Nevertheless I can definitely recommend this movie.
